One of my colleagues, a science teacher, has the students do a really cool activity to improve vocabulary acquisition. Before the lecture, before meanings and definitions are given and explained, she has the students fill out a chart with the word and what they think the word means. After the lesson, then they fill out what it really means, give examples and reflect on whether their original guess was correct (or even close!).
While grading one unit’s vocabulary, we came across this: “Osmosis-Osmosis is a terrorist!!!” The student included an intense sketch of an Osama bin Laden look-alike wearing a turban and t-shirt emblazoned with “I am Osmosis the Terrorist!”
