True stories from an urban educator
A young lady walked into my classroom while I was jamming to Meatloaf during my plan.
When the song was almost over, she looked at me, confused, and asked, “What is this song even about??”
And so I told her.
Universe, you are welcome!
Student (point to my shoulder in disgust): What is THAT?!
Me (looking): I’m peeling, dude.
Student (horrified): What?!
Me (with a sigh): White people peel after they get sun burned.
Student: Oh (then horrified again), will you lose your tattoo???
Me (laughing): No, someone would have to do something like “scalp” my shoulder for that.
Other student: Or burn it.
Me: True.
Other student: Which do you think would hurt worse?
Me:
The kids know Bob Marley died in 1981 (I told them).
They know his kids are my age/older (we discussed this as a class).
They also know that I am 37 years old (it gets brought up almost daily).
But…
The kids still think I’m married to Bob Marley. Does that mean I’m a failure as a math teacher?!
When you want to make LIFE more realistic for the kids lol…
We wanted to expand the “normal” game of life to include more real life events, as well as try to show the kids how some of their dream careers (e.g. dancers, DJs, etc.) might not be as lucrative as they thought. That said, I did include living in a tree house and yours truly did end up as a doctor with a Hummer living in a shack (after my spouse left me), so realistic maybe not so much, haha!
Bottom line, this was a lot of fun to create as well as execute. The kids had fun, used some math skills, and we will definitely be playing this again!
